You Don't Have to Be Perfect — Just Passionate
The Alumni Band was built on the idea that music shouldn't end at graduation. Mike Drapeau started this band because he saw talented musicians putting down their instruments after high school and college — and he wanted to give them a reason to pick them back up.
That spirit lives on today. Our members range from those returning after 30 years away to active music teachers who want to keep playing in an ensemble. What we all share is a love of music and a commitment to showing up on Tuesday nights.
"Many of our members are returning to their instruments after years away. If you can read music and want to play again, there's a seat for you here."

What to Expect When You Visit
Visiting for the first time can feel nerve-wracking — here's exactly what will happen.
Arrive at 6:15 PM
Give yourself a few minutes before the 6:30 start. GracePoint Church has a parking lot — just walk in through the main entrance.
Introduce yourself
Find the conductor or a board member when you arrive. Let them know you're interested in joining — they'll get you set up with a seat and music.
Listen or sit in
You're welcome to sit and listen your first visit, or bring your instrument and play along. There's no pressure either way.
Meet the band
Rehearsals are friendly and welcoming. Members often chat before and after — it's a genuine community, not just a rehearsal.
Decide if it's right for you
Come a few times before committing. There are no contracts or obligations — just show up when you can and enjoy the music.
Common Questions
Do I need to audition?
No. The Alumni Band does not hold traditional auditions. We ask that you be able to read music and commit to regular attendance, but there's no tryout. Just come to a rehearsal and introduce yourself.
What if I haven't played in years?
Many of our members came back after 10, 20, or even 30 years away from their instrument. It takes a few weeks to get your embouchure and reading back, but the band is supportive and patient. Come and give it a try.
Is there a membership fee?
There is a modest annual membership fee that helps cover operating costs. Contact us for current details — no one is turned away for financial reasons.
How many performances per year?
We typically perform at 4–6 events per year including the Christmas Concert, La Kermesse parade, our spring Scholarship Concert, and other community appearances. Attendance at performances is expected but life happens — we're flexible.
What skill level do I need?
You should be able to read standard music notation at a basic level. We play community concert band literature — not conservatory-level material. If you played in a school band, you have enough background to participate.
Do I need to bring my own instrument?
Yes, members bring their own instruments. If you don't currently own yours or need help sourcing one, contact us — we may be able to point you in the right direction.
Can I just come watch first?
Absolutely. You're welcome to sit in on a rehearsal without your instrument and just get a feel for the group. Many of our members did exactly that before deciding to join.
