Scholarship Recipients
Congratulations to every student who has received the Marcel "Mike" Drapeau Scholarship.
The Southern Maine Alumni Band is proud to announce the recipients of the 2026 Marcel "Mike" Drapeau Alumni Band Scholarship: Alden Gilg, a graduating senior from Thornton Academy, and Lily Dubois, a graduating senior from Noble High School. Each student will receive a $1,000 scholarship in recognition of their outstanding achievements and dedication both in and beyond the music classroom.
The Marcel "Mike" Drapeau Alumni Band Scholarship was established to honor the life, legacy, and enduring impact of Mike Drapeau, a beloved educator, musician, mentor, and advocate for music education. Through this scholarship, the Southern Maine Alumni Band seeks to recognize graduating seniors who exemplify the values Mike championed throughout his life: musical excellence, leadership, perseverance, character, and a commitment to serving others.
Alden and Lily were selected from a talented pool of applicants for their exceptional accomplishments as musicians, their leadership within their schools and communities, and their dedication to making a positive difference in the lives of those around them. Both students have demonstrated a passion for music that extends beyond performance, embracing opportunities to lead, mentor, and contribute to their communities in meaningful ways.
As they begin the next chapter of their educational journeys, Alden and Lily represent the very spirit of the Marcel "Mike" Drapeau Scholarship. Their hard work, integrity, and commitment to excellence reflect the lasting values that Mike instilled in generations of students and musicians.
The Southern Maine Alumni Band congratulates Alden and Lily on this well-deserved honor and wishes them continued success in all their future endeavors. We are honored to support these remarkable young people as they pursue their goals and continue the tradition of leadership, service, and musical achievement that this scholarship celebrates.
Alden's achievements are numerous. At the heart of his work is a deep love for music and a desire to express himself musically whenever possible. His primary instrument is violin, though he also plays oboe, bassoon, keyboard, and sings. He has performed with the Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra, his school's string trio, and at District and MMEA All-State Festivals.
Alden's inspiration to pursue music began with the Pineland Fiddlers, performing at contradances and folk concerts. Though he performs in traditional musical groups, he also creates them โ founding the TA String Trio at Thornton Academy, creating additional performance opportunities for himself and his peers.
Lily is an accomplished vocalist whose talent has earned her placement in the highest auditioned ensembles at Noble High School, as well as performances at the District One and MMEA All-State Festivals. She helped establish the Whole Note and Half Note Program for incoming 8th-grade students, creating a welcoming environment that encouraged participation and confidence.
Lily serves as a section leader for the Chamber Singers and Treble Choir and has served as a teacher's assistant for the past three years, accumulating more than 300 hours of community service โ an exceptional achievement reflecting her dedication to mentoring peers and supporting younger musicians.
